POLICY & ADVOCACY
Democracy is strongest when people understand how laws are made, how power is exercised, and how their voices can shape national decisions. Our policy and advocacy work ensures that the principles in our Constitution are not just words on paper, but living commitments that protect every person in Zambia.
We work at the intersection of law, governance, and civic freedom championing reforms that uphold dignity, justice, and accountability.
Our Policy Focus Areas
Our advocacy is driven by the belief that when institutions respect the Constitution, society becomes safer, fairer, and more free.
We focus on areas where rights are most vulnerable and where change can meaningfully improve lives:
Emergency powers & detention
We push for clear, lawful limits on state power—because no one should lose their liberty without due process. Our work emphasises safeguards during states of emergency, arrests, and detention, ensuring that constitutional protections remain intact even in moments of crisis.
Media freedom & civic space
A healthy democracy requires a free press and an active citizenry. We advocate for laws and policies that allow journalists, activists, and ordinary citizens to speak, debate, organise, and hold leaders accountable without fear.
Equality & non-discrimination
Every person deserves equal protection under the law. We promote reforms that prevent discrimination, whether based on gender, ability, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics so that Zambia moves closer to a society anchored in fairness.
Judicial Independence & the Rule of Law
An independent judiciary is the backbone of constitutional governance. We monitor policies and institutional changes that affect the courts, raising the alarm when legal processes or appointments threaten the separation of powers.
Policy briefs & submissions
Behind every reform effort is careful legal research and principled advocacy.
We prepare policy briefs, memos, position papers, and legal opinions that we submit to Parliament, government ministries, regulatory bodies, and regional institutions.
These submissions explain the constitutional implications of proposed laws, highlight risks to civil liberties, and offer constructive solutions grounded in public interest.
We aim to ensure that decision-makers hear the concerns of citizens and that every law passed strengthens, rather than weakens, our democratic foundations.
Legislative reform watch
Laws shape daily life often quietly, and long before the public is aware of their consequences. That is why we track proposed legislation, regulations, and constitutional amendments that may affect rights, freedoms, and accountability.
Through our Legislative Reform Watch, we highlight bills that require public attention, explain their implications in clear language, and mobilise civic engagement when needed.
Because democracy thrives when citizens are informed, alert, and empowered to participate.
